Been there, done that. Here I am to help you out of the rut!
- Distance Yourself
When you want to get over a wall, you don’t try to force your way through. The logical thing to do is step back and look for other ways to get around it. same goes for a creative block! It may not be a literal wall, but sometimes you have to take a step back to see a bigger picture. When you keep yourself too focused on a subject, you may end up overthinking and limiting your range of motion. Not everyone can power their way through walls, and distancing yourself from your work can give you more space for new ideas. The space you create through this can help you cool off and rest your potentially overworked mind.
- Explore New Things
There is nothing wrong with setting things aside when you feel like there is no progress to be made. Time is better spent elsewhere if you plan to be productive, because no progress will be made when you stand still. Be smart with your new found space and time by exploring new things. Switching focus and checking out new ideas, can help you grow and understand concepts that can supplement the work you set aside. I understand that not everyone’s work process is the same, especially those who can completely set aside the project they are currently working on. Exploring new things, can also mean new perspectives! you don’t have to completely derail yourself away from the work you are tackling, but you could consider other ways to supplement the depth your work can have.
You can think of it like doing side quests to increase your level, before fighting the boss.
- Don’t Punish Yourself
If any tip would retain, may it be this one. You shouldn’t beat yourself up over a creative block. You have to understand that going through a creative block is normal, and it happens to everybody. Sometimes, the creative juices don’t flow and the idea well runs dry. You have to know that nothing good comes from punishing yourself, and it may lead to more negative thinking, which would put you in a worse mental state. To remedy this, look at the positives and see the progress you’ve made to end up where you are. It’s hard to see the good in things when you’re experiencing turmoil, but you’d be surprised how much you’ve grown. All creative blocks can be overcome, eventually. You just have to stay strong and keep that positive mental attitude.
To summarize the 3 tips, expand your perspective. Of course, you wouldn’t want to dig yourself into an even deeper hole. I suggest you take a step back and breathe, explore new ideas and concepts, and do not beat yourself up over the creative block.
You have to trust the process.
