Creating content is a great way to express oneself. A cold hard fact of the matter is that no one wants to hear what your opinions are over the internet. Content creation is creative expression for people who want to speak up about a topic rather than be heard regarding the matter. It is a thankless job, but someone’s gotta do it.
Content creation is a great hobby (yes, hot take) to explore, because it can lead to learning new things, fuel your passion and possible monetary gain. If you try creating content, just for the money, you may find yourself spent and burnt out, and with no dollar to your name.
This guide is here as an introduction to content creation as a hobby. May it help you figure out if creating content is for you, and some of the basics to the hobby.
- Research
Knowing what you’re getting into is key to creating content. Like it or not, churning out content is easier said than done. It takes effort and time, because content creation is a commitment. Creating content requires you to always be mindful of what topics or ideas are worth posting online. With that being said, it is a good idea to look up resources available around you to ensure you are aware of what you are getting into.
With everything readily available online, here are a few guide questions to help you decide if you want to pursue the hobby:
- Do you have the skill set to create content?
- Do you have the time to set aside for the hobby?
- What space or industry do you want to focus on?
- Which multimedia platform will you be on? Twitch, Youtube, Tiktok, Blogger, etc?
- What makes you stand out among the other content creators?
These guide questions are a general overview at what you can expect to answer before starting in the hobby. When it comes to creating content, there is a lot of pre-work to be done. Knowing how to manage these things and understanding the process will ensure you are on the right track. Be in-the-know, so that you can make an informed decision.
- Collaborate
No man is an island. Doing everything on your own will limit your growth in the content creation space. Content creation is a social experience, because your goal is to provide value and insights to your audience (even if they don't want or need them).
Collaboration comes in many different forms. When you hear the word "collab", you immediately assume that you have to be in the content they make, but that is not always the case. Collaboration means that you help each other produce or create something together. You can do this by following or liking each other's content or you can try engaging with them to provide extra content for what they made. By reaching out to others in the community, you can rally up support and learn from one another. Building a community is key to generating a following in the content creation space.
- Consistency
Having an online presence is what keeps you relevant. The general rule of content creating is to have at least 2 weeks to a month of content ready. Though it may seem to be a tall order, it gets easier to churn out content when you have existing work to base everything off of.
You don’t have anything worth sharing or value adding? That is ok, because there are other ways to stay consistent. Another way to stay relevant in the space is by engaging with the community. Building connections will strengthen the bond with your existing fanbase and could even gain new followers.
When starting out, consistency builds your content. Churning out content or building relationships with your peers, can get your name out there or keeps you relevant in the space.
- Trust the process
There are no shortcuts when it comes to building your brand. Some people get discouraged when growth is slow. One thing to remember when creating content, is that progress is not linear. It is not always going to be high engagements and high visibility, and that is ok. There will be slow weeks and hardships when creating content. Chances are you will not be earning from this hobby for a while. But if you truly feel like you enjoy creating content, march forward and power through!
You have to trust the process. To survive the content creation industry, you have to grind it out. You are a nobody trying to rise above a sea of so many content creator trying to do the same. Some of them may have a competitive edge over you, but don’t let this prevent you from your passion of creating content. You can learn so much by reflecting on the highs and lows of your experiences, and you may eventually see yourself joining the known creators in the space.
