Marvel Snap, a digital collectible card game with the Marvel Intellectual Property (IP). I played it during launched and was not impressed by its gameplay. It initially felt like a digital clone of Smash Up, a popular tabletop deckbuilding game. The gameplay loop is: you mix and match cards to make synergy and take control of locations for points. My early impression of it was clearly negative, because I felt like they used the Marvel IP as a way to suck money out of its fanbase. With its lackluster gameplay and somewhat repetitive gameplay back then, I immediately uninstalled the game. Now, more than a year later, I decided to pick it up again and wow, I was so wrong with my first impression! If it survived a year in a time where competitive game turnovers are rampant, there must be something special about it.
How did I end up picking it up again? Like every gaming itch, I was bored and I was looking for a new game to play. I scrolled through Twitch and I saw that the game still had a big following, despite my initial impression of it. So I decided to follow the player base, and gave it a second chance (I am so glad I did).
Marvel Snap, as the name suggests, is a fast paced digital collectible card game where you aim to defeat your opponent by taking control of 2 out 3 locations in the span of 5 to 7 turns. The game also has a "Snap" function which allows the player to either double the rank points they gain or lose, which makes gameplay more exciting.
So what makes Marvel Snap deserving of a 2nd chance? Updates and F2P support.
With Marvel Snap being over a year old, if its kept its players active, it must mean that the updates kept the game exciting. With more locations added to the game, each game will less likely play like the previous one. It also balances the power levels of certain meta decks, because they can be dealt with using the properly utilizing the locations. There are some locations that may be revealed to hard counter certain deck strategies and it is fun to figure out how to play around them. Speaking of meta decks, cards are key to the enjoyment of any card game (duh). With new cards added to the game, it revitalizes the gameplay as new archetypes and builds are created to utilize said cards. New cards are fun to brew around and it keeps the community of deckbuilders happy. With new cards and locations being added in the game, you can expect new fun ways to enjoy Marvel Snap.
Now, let's move on to the lifeline of every digital card game... Is it free-to-play friendly? Yes!
Basically, you can pay real money to get a Variant (skin) of the card or earn the base card from leveling up. This is done through a model wherein each level bracket gives you access to a card pool where you randomly get a new card per certain levels reached. You can think of it like weighted gacha which allows you to build decks that are competitive in the current level or rank you are in, because you know which cards you have access to and they will synergize with the other cards in the card pool. Kudos to Marvel Snap for coming with this card distribution model, because it keeps away the jank decks and allows the players access to competitive play on equal footing with others.
Marvel Snap is a great free-to-play friendly digital collectible card game worth checking out again! Its fast paced gameplay makes it an easily digestible game when you are on the go. With the variety of content is has to offer, gameplay rarely feels redundant and stale. With the game model it has, it is no surprise it is a very competitive game, because of how balanced the gameplay feels, whether you are a ranked competitor or casual player.
As an avid card game player, I like how refreshing Marvel Snap is to the card game genre and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to be competitive. I would recommend Marvel Snap to people looking for a quick and competitive card game that you can casually set aside time for. All it takes is a few dailies and you're en route to reaching the higher ranks.
