The most awaited Dota 2 tournament starts in a few days!! How will things unfold in the city of Seattle? What stories and moments will this TI be remembered for?
Let's not get ahead of ourselves, and let us look at what the tournament can potentially be! Time for a Pre TI23 Tournament Analysis!
An Overview
This year has been quite a ride. The world began opening up and teams are now more diverse, with players coming from different regions playing under one banner. There were a lot of firsts and lasts. The DPC system is being retired, Dota 2 received one of the biggest updates its had in years, and let's not forget, no Battle Pass for this TI12. It is sad to see the norm go, but progress must happen. Even the format of The International 2023 is new! TI12 is reborn in Seattle, HQ of Valve, and the event will be a month long!
The Teams
With the tournament happening in the USA, a country strict with VISA applications, it is no surprise to see a few teams run into some passport issue. Rumors have been circulating that teams will have stand-ins, but do not fret, these stand-ins will be iconic. Adding to the stand-ins, we see the return of Topson in Tundra to fill the gap of the out of commission, Saksa. Sad to see, but these things happen...
Not to dwell on the negatives, here are some upbeat information for you fans! The Dota 2 eSport scene is not dead! We got rising stars amongst the grizzled veterans. It's been awhile, but the Americas are taking the spotlight with 3 NA teams and 4 SA teams in the tournament. Adding to this, the 2 dominant WEU teams each has a player from America, so talk about bring the Dota 2 back to the Americas!
Speaking of diversity has raised the level of competitive play this year. We saw teams scout and recruit players from different regions and found success with them in the competitive scene. Notably Quinn, a mid laner from the NA region, won several tournaments with the WEU team, Gaimin Gladiators. The addition of Gabbi, a position 1 player from SEA, in the offlane of Entity was their needed piece to win a slot through the regional qualifiers.
If I could rank each region in terms of competitiveness it would be as followed:
- WEU
- EEU
- NA/SA
- CN
- SEA
The Predictions
If the basis will be DreamLeague tournament, meta wise, we will be seeing a lot of farming. But given that the new patch came with nerfs for Phantom Assassin, she may not be the most contested carry of the tournament. Gold funneling will be extensively utilized and it's all about putting all the eggs in the position 1 basket. It can also go the other way, given teams had time to figure out countermeasure for the farming carry meta, we can be seeing a lot more early game team compositions. Team compositions that rely on early game ganks and team fights with heroes that peak early to mid game.
Moving on to the spicy part... Actual tournament predictions!
In the group stage, a meta will be made and teams who do not adapt get eliminated. I believe 3 out the 7 American teams will be eliminated. Adding to this, I think the majority of the bottom teams of group stage will be coming from the SEA and CN regions, if not Americas. The ones topping the group stage will most likely be EEU teams, like Team Spirit, 9Pandas and lone WEU representative, Gaimin Gladiators.
On to the Playoff predictions!!
The favored team, Gaimin Gladiators, favored to go through an easy upper bracket run. Though they may have trouble dealing with Team Spirit. Team Liquid on the other hand, may be looking at a lower bracket start and slowly may need to grind their way to the finals. LGD, the hope of CN this TI12, may have a hard time adjusting to the European gameplay favored meta. I see a region knockout between 2 SA teams happening, and NA's Shopify Rebellion looking good, but will eventually get eliminated. But who knows, NA may just have the hometown buff, being in Seattle and all that. As for underdogs, Talon eSports and Entity are teams to watch out for. If these 2 teams have the momentum, they can potentially steamroll their opponents.
Now... On to the Grand Finals!!
My Top 4 teams, in no particular order:
- Gaimin Gladiators
- Team Spirit
- Entity
- LGD Gaming
