Let's look back... It was early 2020, news of a virus caused the population to lock themselves at home. Society had to fast track a new ways to circumnavigate unfamiliar territory. Face to face interaction was forbidden. Skype? Zoom? Google meet? Nah. We get on Discord... WIT DA BOISZSZSZ
Discord? The communication platform that had it all!
Unlimited minutes on Video and Voice Chat? Done.
Screen Share? Done.
Access to different servers with one account? Done.
Free? Mostly haha
It was the gamer's best tool when it came with staying connected with online friends, and it became society's friend too! (DO NOTE! This is not a paid ad for Discord)
Don't get me wrong, the pandemic was a bad time for all of us, some more so. But through the pandemic, we saw the return of some workaholic gaming friends, as the became glued to their home setups. It reignited the passion to game in some corporate slaves and revive old connections. The Discord server became the new speakeasy for work/home life conversations. These human interactions kept a lot of us sane during times of cabin fever.
Discord became the go-to place to find connections. Hop on any random server and you may find yourself in a new playgroup for different online games. Fight over the affection of an E-girl by staying loyal in their personal Discord servers. Start new relationships with your potential forever duo on the dating platform... Discord. And of course, reconnect with old buddies in your very own, very wholesome server WIT DA BOISZSZSZ. Good vibes amidst the fear of COVID.
Personally, Discord was a big part of my pandemic life. I got to stay connected with friends and even made new ones. Adding to that, it reignited my passion for gaming and opened the door to content creation. I love how Discord made a difference in my life through the accessibility of communication. Everything was all in one place, it was so convenient! Getting on Discord was one of the highlights of my days (sometimes, being there the whole day haha). During the time, unwinding with my friends and playing a few games together made us forget about the whole pandemic situation.
It was just like the good ol' days...
Now back to the present, it's now a "new normal", with people heading back to the offices. Discord servers aren't as noisy as they were during the height of the pandemic. Some connections made through the platform fell off. I can't help but look back at how Discord made the pandemic a little bit more bearable. It fulfilled the need for human connection and it kept us sane during rough times.
From being just another tool to communicate with teammates, Discord, ironically, brought harmony back in our lives during those dark times.
