The last tournament before the most anticipated Dota 2 tournament... TI 2023! Dreamleague season 21 became a testing ground for possible strategies in TI. Though viewers may argue that not all teams played their best as to not overexert before TI, Dreamleague was still an action packed show of TI competitors (minus OG) butting heads.
Highlights
In team related news, we saw the first showing of the TI 2023 Tundra lineup with Topson playing mid and Nine playing position 4. For those who are unaware, Saksa took an extended mental health break which resulted with Tundra getting a substitute for TI. In this tournament, the team went 50/50 due to possible adjustments in playstyles and coordination. They did very well in the group stage, thus landing them in the upper bracket of the tournament. Sadly their run ran short when they lost to Topson's previous organization, OG.
Speaking of OG, we saw the return of OG.mc, but this time he isn't being told to play like Ceb, but rather with him! The duo played position 3 and 4 respectively and the fans were excited to see the return of the mc magic. Matches wise, they did fairly well having been a just recently formed line up again. They drew out most of their group stage matches, only dropping against Team Spirit and a 2-0 versus EG. Given their standing, they landed a spot in the lower bracket. They had an great early run, having dominated 9Pandas 2-0. Soon after that, they faced Tundra, now equipped with Topson, a team they've been having issues dealing with. Matches were well fought, but in game 3, OG looked unstoppable with their great laning stage, thus winning the series. Sadly, their momentum took an abrupt stop when they were 2-0'd by BetBoom. Not a bad run for a non-TI qualified team.
Moving back to some TI team related news, we saw Ammar stand in for Gabbi in Entity, because of US visa processing (which Gabbi got approved for!). The were pretty mid the whole tournament, putting up what was expected of them. Wished we saw a lot more Gabbi action this tournament, because I want to see that Gabbi effect again, much like in the Western Europe Qualifiers. Though in the group stage, they did 2-0 Team Liquid, one of the big contenders of TI 2023.
Sadly, Team Liquid had a pretty lackluster performance in this tournament. It was not like them to just drop games in the group stage, with their score being 2-8, it was rough. Team Liquid, along with Team Talon, were the 2 teams eliminated from Group A. Hopefully this is a much needed wake up call for both teams to shape up and do better in the coming TI.
Last, but certainly not the least, Team Spirit won the tournament!! Kudos to Shopify Rebellion as well. It was a good tournament showing for both teams!
Stats
Now... let's talk numbers for you meta slaves out there!
Out of the 86 games played, the Radiant side had 44 wins and the Dire Side with 42, resulting in a 51-49 percentage split. Out of the same 86 games played, duration went 50-50 with games either being below 40 minutes of above 40 minutes. So the teams preferred to end it quick or farm like there's no tomorrow. These stats are possibly due to the favored heroes of the tournament, where we saw a lot of farm funneling due to the carry choices.
Speaking of carries, we saw Phantom Assassin dominate the tournament. It was picked 22 times and has a 59% win rate. Her late game was insane this tournament! She literally could one shot any low hp support from miles away. There was no counter to her damage, it was only a matter of time before she would inevitable one shot everyone.
Given the farm funneling strat team's preferred in this tournament, their lines ups were mostly setups. We saw a lot of Earth Spirit and Kunkka mid for their great single hero set up and great team fight impact. We saw the return of Vengeful Spirit, Warlock, because of their oppressive mobility and repositioning shenanigans. And of course, the permanent stay, Beast Master, with his ability to bully the enemy laner.

Experience
After watching Dreamleague Season 21, it is obvious that there needs to be a patch prior to The International 2023. The current patch seems like it's been "solved" with teams knowing that bad match ups or hard counters don't matter if you scale. Don't get me wrong, the matches still have hype, but it seems as though everything is formulaic. I wouldn't want to watch 70 minute games with the only thing that matters is that the Phantom Assassin, who definitely needs a nerf, gets her farm to one shot everyone as a comeback mechanic.
It was good to see a tune up for teams prior to TI, and hopefully this gives them new ideas to bring in the year's biggest DOTA 2 tournament. Let's hope some teams wake up or become better with the conclusion of Dreamleague Season 21.
